How did you learn the skills (digital) you use in the work you do now?
I bought a Wacom tablet, installed Corel Painter and started to draw. If you want to create art you have to draw: a lot, that’s the bottom line. Which tools you use matters little, whether it is a 5 cent pencil or a state-of-the-art computer. Art is a product of the mind, not the tools.
What has been your toughest challenge?
The publication of my first magazine cover was a major hurdle for which I was not well prepared.
How did you deal with that challenge?
I made contact with the editor through a writer friend’s recommendation. We started out discussing just illustrations for a humorous column. Then he asked if I would be interested in doing art for the cover. Sure, I said, oozing confidence like a jelly-donut under pressure. I never let on how nervous I was about the project.
I am still doing those covers which suggest the editor still has not caught on that I taught myself how to do this. Since then, I always say I can do it even if I have no clue how I will pull it off. I do my nail biting after the client is gone.
